Project Sketch #1 Tile My Bathroom Shower
11th grade Algebra 2 class
Within the first week of school I will ask my class to become independent contractors. I need to hire a team to tile the shower in my bathroom. Teams will complete to win the contracting job. In order to win the bid proposals must include area of space to be tiled, cost of tiles, list of other materials needed, cost of other materials, cost of labor, timeline to have tiling job complete, and total cost to have shower tiled. Throughout designing the proposal, students must examine the process of tiling a shower wall, justify their choices in materials, and investigate the cost of labor for this type of work. Along the way, students will visit home improvement stores or their websites to look for materials and compare costs, search the web for reliable instructions on how to tile, and investigate the going labor rate for home improvement contractors either online or through interviews. Students will create an informative and persuasive sales pitch to the other students who will act as the client. Their presentations will vary depending on interest. Groups might use PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, Glogster, or Vuvox. A rubric will explicate key learning outcomes. I expect this project to last one week. Students will work on it three times in class and outside of class. The following one of two days will be presentation days.

A: Examine the process of tiling a shower wall. Justify your choices in materials. Design a proposal to bid for tiling job. Investigate the cost of labor and formulate a method for how you will charge for labor.

A: Collaboration within team. Use the internet to locate "How to" videos or tutorials, home improvement websites, and labor costs for local contractors. Create a presentation with PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, Glogster, or Vuvox. Compare product info to determine best product. Determine if websites are reliable. Talk with Home Depot or Lowes employees to learn about which materials are best and why.

Introduction to Project
Students ask parents if they have had something remodeled in their house and how they choose the contractor. Show a picture of rooted wall if I don’t tile my shower wall. Show pictures of my shower.
